Schedule for Malaria refreshing course.

Day 1; Topic “ Malaria Cycle”
            “ The Rapid tests"

Number of participants = 12
Site: SMRU
AM session
9.00-12.00: Introduction of the participants e.g. name, workplace etc.
Introduction of SMRU staff
Distribution of materials “Malaria Manual” (Thai)
“Rapid tests: principle and limitations”. (Thai)
Lecture: Malaria life cycle by Sarika
(PF / PV, PO, PM)
12.00-13.00: Lunch
PM session
13.00-16.00: Lecture: “Malaria Rapid tests (HRP-2 and pLDH)" by Sarika.
Aim: review the principle of both types of tests and their limitations
Participants share their experience in using rapid test
(Problems encountered when using the tests).
Questions and answers with concrete cases.



Day 2: Topics:
"Species differentiation PF and PV on the thin and thick smear"
"Practice how to do a malaria smear"
"Fixing and staining"


Materials needed: Training slide set (PF, PV)

AM session
Group 1
(3 persons):
8.00 – 12.00
Go to Mae La (or Maw Ker Thai) to practice smearing with one SMRU facilitator.
Other groups
(9 persons):
9.00-12.00
The participants practice how to diagnose PF (trophozoites, Schizonts and Gametocytes)
and PV (trophozoites, Schizonts and Gametocytes) on both thin and thick smear.
2 participants and one SMRU facilitator per microscope.
12.00-13.00: Lunch
PM session
All groups
(12 persons):
13.00-13.30
Demonstrate fixing and staining of the slides done by group1 in the morning by Sarika.
All groups
(12 persons):
13.30-16.30
Continue practicing to differentiate PF, PV.

"Fixing and staining"

The participants practice how to diagnose PF (trophozoites, Schizonts and Gametocytes)
and PV (trophozoites, Schizonts and Gametocytes) on both thin and thick smear.
Start to look at PM (trophozoites, Schizonts and Gametocytes) on thin and thick smear.
Start to look at negative slides.
2 participants and one SMRU facilitator per microscope.
12.00-13.00: Lunch

Fixing and staining of the slides done in the morning under supervision.

Start to look at PO (trophozoites, Schizonts and Gametocytes) on thin and thick smear.
Continue to look at negative slides.
2 participants and one SMRU facilitator per microscope.
